At the age of 8-years-old, Angelica picked up her two-year-old sister and fled from her home. She made it to a local fire station and explained that they needed rescuing from their abusive mother. The government assigned them to an orphanage, where they stayed for several years. However, a judge was notified of an uncle and sent them to live with him. For three years, they experienced more physical abuse and several attempts at sexual abuse. Angelica was very afraid but could not take anymore. After making a plan of escape, she awoke very early one morning and ran away again. Some locals helped her, and she was brought before the government once more, who sent her to another orphanage. She spent the next four years at this orphanage until she aged out at 18. Having no place to go nor any means of support, her case was brought before Casa Angelina. We saw something special in her and knew we could help. Even though she is a young woman, Angelica is enrolled in our school. She is catching up on her grades and is also learning English. She has adapted wonderfully to Casa Angelina’s quality of culture and life experience. We have also investigated the whereabouts of her younger sister and hope to reunite them.
